As a group, it is immediately apparent that we will be great friends. While we all have a range of personalities — some are extroverted, some are more quiet — we balance each other out well and so far are having so much fun together! Some commonalities we share are our love for adventure, leadership qualities, curiosity about the world and the environment around us, and academic ambitions. Though we have a lot of similarities, we also differ in many ways. We are involved in a wide variety of clubs, jobs, and other extracurricular activities. We are are tour guides, we are athletes, we are musicians, and we love capybaras. We are confident that our diverse interests and experiences will create a more cohesive cohort. In terms of our group weaknesses, many people voiced a desire to improve upon their research skills, communication skills, and quantitative abilities. Some of us participate in on-campus research, but most do not and therefore are not familiar with formal research procedures. Additionally, there may be some cultural barriers to overcome when participating in interviews. We all come from incredibly different environments and will need to connect with people who are very different from us. A lot of us are a little bit nervous, but we know that as a group we’ll be able to help each other out whenever we need. As we prepare for our summer in Zambia, we are confident that our collective strengths will compensate for our weaknesses. We are open-minded and all excited to work together in this eight week endeavor. We are incredibly eager to dive into the culture of Zambia and embrace all of its experiences and opportunities.
