Letter of Advice - LF
Dear Future Participant,
Get ready for an experience unlike one you have ever had
before! Your summer in Zambia will be a one-of-a-kind hands-on learning
experience, so you must make the most of it. To do this, I have written a list
of things to keep in mind.
11.
Journal often.
Even if journaling isn’t “your thing”, you should still do
it. I often forced myself to journal because I was tired after a long work week
and did not want to write any more words, but after the trip was over I was
thankful that I did it. Your journal will help you to remember all of the
critical moments of the summer as well as any lessons you learned or challenges
you faced.
22.
Embrace the changes.
This is not your typical summer in America. You will not
have many of the luxuries you are used to at home including unlimited Wi-Fi, a
hot shower, and some of your favorites foods. However, I encourage you not to
see these as negatives, but rather embrace life here. Try new foods and read a
book instead of scrolling through Facebook. Also, meet new people. Become friends
with your taxi drivers and your work colleagues.
33.
Bring winter clothes.
I know the packing list suggests bringing layers, but the
weather quickly changes from warm to very cool once you reach the month of
July. In order to prevent yourself from going shopping like I did, pack a few
sweaters and even a light jacket. Zambians will act like it is below freezing,
but the weather is more like a fall in Ithaca.
44.
Go with the flow.
There can be many hiccups in beginning your research project
as well as living with a new family. I know I felt uncomfortable during my
first few nights in my homestay and was worried about my research project when it
did not have a clear direction for the first few weeks. However, these concerns
sorted themselves out as time went on and I became more comfortable. In my
workplace, I was able to ask for help with my project. In my homestay, I bonded
with my family over common interests and family dinners. In situations like
these, you must keep an open mind and search for solutions. Do not become
frustrated or brought down if things don’t always go as smoothly as planned,
just continue to go with the flow.
This summer will go by so fast and you do not want to miss
it. I had no idea what to expect coming into this experience, but I would not
have wanted to spend my summer anywhere else. It is the perfect balance of
exploring while still working hard. I also learned a lot about myself and my
future career goals through my work. You will get the most out of this
experience if you go into it without expectations and with a mindset open to
learning. I wish you the best as you begin your journey to Zambia!
Best wishes,
Lexi
